Significantly, the latest expansion to the initial recall comes on the heels of the revelation that Takata, the manufacturer of airbags used in numerous vehicle brands, knew that its airbags were defective as far back as 2008.  While the company reportedly altered its design in response to this knowledge, it did not action to alert consumers and motorists at risk of airbag injury.

For a more detailed explanation, check out our earlier post here.  Briefly, Takata chose to cut costs and use a volatile airbag propellant (a compound that inflates the airbag).  The dangerous new propellant can cause airbags to explode and propel metal shrapnel into the vehicle cabin.  According to one source, “In at least one case, first responders thought a victim had been viciously stabbed by someone, only learning later that it was the airbags that were responsible for the extensive injuries.”

Thus far, the defective airbags have been linked to six deaths and over a hundred injuries, with many injured victims doubtlessly and rightfully contemplating filing an auto defect lawsuit.
