Ohio Auto Defect Lawyers: Takata Recall Continues to Expand, Now Covers 34 Million Vehicles
May 23, 2015While reports that the Takata airbag recall is now the largest recall in U.S. history may not be correct, it is hard to argue that the recall of 33.8 million vehicles is not the most significant defective product recall in recent memory. As dedicated Ohio auto defect lawyers, we have repeatedly discussed this recall and the dangers created by Takata’s defective airbags. The vast scope of those dangers continues to become clearer as the public is given access to more information.
Significantly, the latest expansion to the initial recall comes on the heels of the revelation that Takata, the manufacturer of airbags used in numerous vehicle brands, knew that its airbags were defective as far back as 2008. While the company reportedly altered its design in response to this knowledge, it did not action to alert consumers and motorists at risk of airbag injury.
What Kind of Auto Defect Could Lead to a Recall of This Size?
For a more detailed explanation, check out our earlier post here. Briefly, Takata chose to cut costs and use a volatile airbag propellant (a compound that inflates the airbag). The dangerous new propellant can cause airbags to explode and propel metal shrapnel into the vehicle cabin. According to one source, “In at least one case, first responders thought a victim had been viciously stabbed by someone, only learning later that it was the airbags that were responsible for the extensive injuries.”
Thus far, the defective airbags have been linked to six deaths and over a hundred injuries, with many injured victims doubtlessly and rightfully contemplating filing an auto defect lawsuit.
Ohio Auto Defect Lawyers Who Can Help You
Whether the auto defect in question is a defective airbag, crushed roof, auto seat failure, or any other unreasonably dangerous defect in a vehicle, manufacturers must be held accountable. Even minor auto defects can end catastrophically when drivers lose control in traffic, and major defects like the one involved in the Takata airbag recall frequently end in the loss of at least one life. Manufacturers cannot be permitted to cause this type of injury and threaten the public safety for the sake of the bottom line.
