On Tuesday, vehicle manufacturer Polaris Industries Inc. recalled approximately 133,000 of its “recreational off-highway vehicles” following more than 160 reports of fires, nearly 20 reports of injuries, and one death. With so many reports of the vehicles catching fire during operation, one has to wonder what sort of manufacturer could in good conscience take so long to recall these dangerous vehicles.

Polaris vehicles are popular, and in use by unsuspecting owners and operators throughout Ohio. If you or someone you know owns a Polaris RZR, do not drive or ride in the vehicle until it can be repaired. And if you have suffered injury as the result of a Polaris RZR fire, know that an experienced auto defect lawyer in Ohio can help you navigate the legal path to receiving compensation for your injuries.

Which Models Are Affected?

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, certain vehicles of the following models have been recalled:

  • 2013/2014 RZR XP 900
  • 2014/2015/2016 RZR XP 1000
  • 2015/2016 RZR 900
  • 2015/2016 RZR S 900
  • 2016 RZR S 1000

The manufacturer has narrowed the recall to specific VINs, which can be found on their website.

The Polaris RZR May Cause Burn Injuries and Wrongful Death

Thus far, incidents in which the recalled RZR vehicles have caught fire have resulted in first, second, and third degree burn injuries. In one incident, the RZR fire resulted in the death of a 15-year-old passenger.

Whether in a car or an ROV, on the highway or off-road, drivers and passengers have a right to expect our vehicles to operate free of dangerous defects. By holding manufacturers like Polaris responsible in civil court, those injured by auto defects may both obtain compensation for their injuries and send a powerful message that we as consumers will not allow manufacturers to put their profits before our safety.
