Mercedes-Benz USA Recalls 126,000 Vehicles Due to Airbag Defects

November 14, 2015

In case you missed it, Mercedes-Benz USA filed a recall report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration last month announcing the recall of 126,260 vehicles.  Per the report summary, “Due to a manufacturing error, the air bag control unit [in affected vehicles] may corrode and cause the control unit to malfunction.”  This can cause either unexpected deployment while driving or a failure to deploy during a crash, meaning that the defective airbags pose risks to motorists both in everyday use and during motor vehicle accidents.

The vehicles being recalled for potential risk of airbag injuries include:

  • Model Year 2008-2009 C300 Sedan
  • Model Year 2008-2009 C300 4Matic
  • Model Year 2008-2009 C63 AMG
  • Model Year 2008-2009 C350
  • Model Year 2010 GLK350
  • Model Year 2010 GLK350 4Matic

Airbag Injuries Can Occur In All Makes and Models of Vehicles

As safety-minded consumers, the people of this country do their best to research things like crash ratings and quality testing when purchasing a vehicle.  Unfortunately, though, all of the research available to consumers can sometimes be meaningless when a manufacturing error or a design defect compromises vehicle safety.  As seen in the above Mercedes-Benz airbag recall and the now infamous Takata airbag recall, manufacturer negligence can often go unnoticed for years until factors like corrosion, repetitive use, or even weather conditions begin to interact with an auto defect to an extent that the defect becomes apparent.  And when defects do finally become apparent, they often lead to tragedy.

Injuries and deaths caused by unexpected airbag deployment, failure to deploy, burning, or airbag shrapnel are unacceptable.  Drivers and passengers have a right to rely on airbags and should not have to question their safety.  When an airbag defect or manufacturer error does malfunction, automobile manufacturers should be held accountable for the injuries that result.

If you or a loved one have suffered an airbag injury, call an Ohio airbag injury attorney at Lowe Scott Fisher Co., LPA for a free consultation.
