Second Recall Issued After “Fixed” Chrysler Vehicles Catch Fire

Following a 2014 recall of certain model year Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees, Chrysler this week issued a new recall of the same vehicles in connection with faulty wiring in the vehicles’ sun visors—the same defect reported in the original recall. This second recall comes after a government investigation was launched earlier this year in response to reports of electrical fires in vehicles that had purportedly been repaired. Regular readers will remember that this is the second recall repair failure in recent memory, as only four months ago Nissan recalled nearly one million vehicles after the manufacturer’s remedy for an airbag defect did not adequately fix the known issue.

The Chrysler Sun Visor Recall

Chrysler’s latest recall applies to Dodge Durangos and Jeep Grand Cherokees, model years 2011-2013, and covers both vehicles that were inadequately repaired in the prior recall and those that did not receive the repair. According to the safety recall report filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the 388,504 recalled vehicles “may experience a high resistive short at the vanity lamp wiring,” a defect that can and has caused visor fires. It should be immediately apparent that any type of vehicle fire can endanger lives, and the threat of injury or death is only exacerbated when these types of defective components malfunction while a vehicle is in traffic.
